Introduction to Lightyear Foundation
We’re Lightyear Foundation — a charity driven by the belief that all disabled and neurodivergent young people should have the opportunity to thrive in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
Founded in 2012, Lightyear Foundation is a pioneering, proudly disabled-led UK charity. We are the only organisation in the country solely dedicated to removing barriers and creating inclusive, empowering opportunities in STEM for disabled and neurodivergent children and young people.
At the heart of our work is the lived experience of disabled and neurodivergent people. Our strategy, leadership and programmes are shaped by those with direct knowledge of the systemic barriers our communities face. We focus on inclusion, joy, and empowerment — enabling young people to explore STEM in ways that work for them and reflect their strengths.
Our Vision
A world where all disabled and neurodivergent people thrive.
We imagine a world where inclusion is the norm, barriers are dismantled, and the voices, talents and contributions of disabled and neurodivergent people are recognised and celebrated in every aspect of society — including STEM.
Our Mission
To provide accessible and inclusive STEM opportunities for disabled and neurodivergent children and young people, empowering them to discover, explore, learn, lead, and benefit from STEM. We will celebrate their achievements, foster collaboration, influence the STEM sector, and inform policy.
