3D Metal Printing

Virtual Work Inspiration Trip

Who are we?

3D Metal Printing is a company that works with the University of Bath to make metal parts that help align bones around the knee.

We help patients suffering from knee arthritis by keeping their knees in working order, and reducing their pain.

Each part is tailored to the patient. We scan the knee and make a 3D-printed part that fits it perfectly. A surgeon can then fit the part to the knee.

We care a lot about design and quality

Kate is a Design and Quality Engineer, working on our metal parts. Listen to her talk about why she loves her job, and all the ways that engineering plays a part in our lives.

How do you help people with knee problems?

“My company designs and makes equipment for when people need operations on their knees. We use the latest technology to make sure it's individual to every person we see.

We use software to plan and calculate all aspects of the operation before it takes place. This means much less time in hospital, that the operation goes well and that it costs the hospital less money too.

Each procedure is tailor-made for the patient, with 3D planning available to the surgeon based on a CT scan of the patient. This allows us to create a custom plate and operative jig which are then printed using a 3D printer in a metal called titanium.”
