Lightyear was founded in 2010 by Laura, Fran, Pete and Doug who had worked as volunteers with the Ghana Planetarium in Accra. They returned to the UK excited by the passion they’d seen in Ghana’s students and teachers for learning science.
They also saw a huge opportunity to support the teaching of science by dispelling the idea that doing practical science requires expensive, specialised equipment, where alternatives are available using local, low-cost materials combined with a bit of scientific know-how and a splash of creativity.
Since 2010 Lightyear has run a number of projects in Ghana and the UK to enable children to explore, get excited by and gain a deeper understanding of science. Volunteers with expertise, skills, and enthusiasm are key to achieving these aims so get in touch if you want to get involved.
