Accessibility in the Workplace: Supporting Disabled Colleagues in STEM

Recent years have seen headway in tackling STEM’s inclusivity and diversity issues, but it’s still work in progress. The good news is that there’s a growing realisation that a homogeneous workforce tends to come up with narrow-focused solutions. To overcome the big global challenges, our scientists and engineers of the future need to come from all walks of life. Lightyear Foundation's SEN in STEM Network is proud to present this FREE online roundtable event, exploring how to make STEM workplaces more accessible and inclusive for disabled staff, and why having a diverse workforce is so important.

Dr Claire Malone will talk to us about creating an inclusive environment for under-represented groups in STEM, drawing from her personal experience as a disabled physicist in academia. She will discuss the types of barriers that disabled people can face and examine what organisations can do to break them down successfully and sustainably.

Emma Diserens, Lightyear Foundation STEM Lead, will follow with a roundtable session covering practical guidance and best practice on including disabled professionals in STEM workplaces, cultivating environments where everyone feels able to participate and achieve their potential.

Attendees will be invited to ask questions and share ideas throughout.

By the end of the event, we hope that you will:

  •  have a better understanding of disability and the importance of diversity in STEM organisations;

  • be confident in managing and supporting colleagues with a disability or health condition, from recruitment and induction through to training, development and progression;

  • be able to better identify and reduce the barriers that could potentially be preventing disabled colleagues from participating and/or developing to their full potential.
